The Thurlestone Hotel, South Devon

Offering a warm welcome and timeless charm, the Thurlestone Hotel holds a unique appeal among Devon hotels. Cherished by its guests and loved by locals, The Thurlestone hotel is a luxurious, classic, family-run four-star hotel. Owned and managed by the Grose family since 1896, Thurlestone Hotel guests have enjoyed its character, hospitality and friendly first-class service for more than 120 years.

With a very loyal clientele who return to the hotel year after year, the challenge was to bring the hotel up to date and to appeal to the next generation and some new customers, but without losing any of the long standing ones in the process. Frances Healy was the lead Interior Designer on this job, having worked closely with the Thurlestone Hotel for a number of years.

Frances said that 'the biggest change was convincing the owners and the board of Directors to throw out the wool carpets throughout all the public areas and replace them all with vinyl ‘wooden’ flooring and loose floor rugs – a classic Country House look. It was big decision, but it paid off and the result looks smart and relaxed and have the added bonus of being super practical for sandy feet and paws alike.'

And this is where we came in, we have worked closely with Frances on various projects for years and were delighted to help out on this one too! With a quick turnaround we had a full team working on this one, fitting a huge amount of herringbone Amtico LVT flooring in the reception area and corridors. This is extremely durable and hard wearing so perfect for these high traffic areas, and like Frances said very practical for those sandy paws that have come straight from the beach. 

We also supplied fitted rugs to give a warmer country feel to the seating areas plus in the bar and restaurant areas. These are Fibre Flooring from their EasyCare Range which is designed for heavy domestic use, is suitable for indoor and outdoor use, plus has the bonus of being bleach cleanable. Making this a perfect choice for those cosier areas of the hotel that still need to be super practical too. We also fitted a few inset carpeted rugs in the hallway to break up the Amtico flooring to create warmth but also keeping the main walkway throughout the hotel a safe area for all generations.

We have since returned to the family hotel to re do all of the main corridors and staircases in a beautiful wool green striped carpet to stay in keeping with the brands ethos. It now creates a bold and elegant impact throughout the hotel for everyone to enjoy.
